STONE TEMPLE PILOTS are back and performing harder than ever before. STP really brought the crowd to their feet at the Mohegan Sun Arena in CT. I’m ashamed to say that this was my first time seeing them live. I’ve always been a fan but for some reason I never got a chance to take in one of their live shows and boy have I been missing out. I was excited to see Scott Weiland, Dean DeLeo, Robert DeLeo and Eric Kretz together again performing the songs that made them famous. The first time I saw the video for SEX TYPE THING I knew this is the band for me and Scott Weiland still has some of the fanciest stage moves ever! CORE will always be my favorite Stone Temple Pilots album because honestly, I love every song on it and it was my first journey into the minds of such an interesting band.
Stone Temple Pilots had a gorgeous stage setup with huge screens that changed to suit the mood of the music. They used their smoke machines perfectly so it highlighted them without hiding them. As a photographer, you can’t ask for more than a band that actually enjoys being photographed and performs at such a tremendous level. Scott Weiland sounded spot on, even while singing through a megaphone. All of the members performed musically and physically at a superb level. I can’t think of a negative thing to say about the show. My favorite songs were “Wicked Garden”, “Sex Type Thing”, “Big Empty”, “Dead and Bloated”, “Vasoline” and “Interstate Love Song”. I would recommend that you not be as lame as I was and check STONE TEMPLE PILOTS out live NOW.
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS Album Review by Shawn Marazine
All five of the previous studio albums by Stone Temple Pilots were produced by Brendon O'Brien and they decided to record and produce their sixth album entitled, "Stone Temple Pilots" in Eric Kretz's Bomb Shelter studio in LA and Robert DeLeo Homefry Studio in South Bay. The band used a combination of classic analog gear with current digital recording techniques to achieve a classic Led Zepplin like sound mixed by Chris Lord-Age. "Take A Load off" and "Huckleberry Crumble" gives us that familiar STP sound with a blend of bluesy Jimmy Page licks and the album seems to focus more on a raw, classic rock vibe instead of a modern, over compressed and saturated sound. The mixes have a more open dynamic sound which is extremely refreshing compared to most current bands who feel they need to have massive loudness that just leaves you with it peaked out and washy. Even though this album didn't hit me as fast as past STP albums, it started to grow on me the more that I listened to it and got what the band was going for.
