Lawyers – master negotiators or master manipulators? Is there a difference? When the Nurses’ Union threatens to strike over their contracts with Prescott Hospital, Pearson Hardman are called in to help the hospital strike a deal with Nell Sawyer (the ever-brilliant Margo Martindale), head of the nurses’ union. In a continuing bid to keep Daniel Hardman (David Costabile) out of action, Jessica (Gina Torres) assigns the case to star closer, Harvey (Gabriel Macht).
Nell proves herself to be a tough nut to crack, having already burned through four other negotiators before Harvey. Nurses are overworked and underpaid – they simply want a portion of the funds the hospital recently raised for new equipment to be allocated to give nurses a raise that they deserve.
Not to be outdone, Daniel injects himself into the negotiations. He turns up in court before Harvey representing himself as the hospital’s lawyer and then begins his own game of manipulations, using Mike (Patrick J. Adams) as the pawn in the middle. Does Mike have the stomach to play dirty if need be? Keen to make an impression on Harvey, Mike meets with Nell at his grandmother’s (Rebecca Schull) nursing home to strike a deal that is a win-win for both sides.
Meanwhile, Jessica is concerned that Pearson Hardman’s campus recruitment privileges at Harvard Law School are in jeopardy after a survey shows the firm came second to last in quality of life. Recognizing that Louis (Rick Hoffman), partner-in-charge of the associates, rather takes pride in making their associates’ lives miserable, Jessica wants him to make sure that the problem is rectified.
Louis invites a representative from Harvard, Sheila Sazs (Rachel Harris) to observe and interview the associates and soon finds a kindred spirit in her – a “female Louis”. Sheila tells him his associates don’t respect him and don’t believe that he works as hard as they do. As he wallows in this sleight on his reputation, he and Harvey share a rare moment of camaraderie and reminisce over their days as associates together at Pearson Hardman.
With her very brief relationship with Mike now over, Rachel (Meghan Markle) joins a dating site in an attempt to move on. She also gets a little help from Donna (Sarah Rafferty) and Harvey’s credit card. Happy hour on the boss’ dime is the most fun anyone can have.
