Having grown up in New Jersey, naturally I was a Kevin Smith fan from the moment I saw Clerks. Close to eighteen years later, and I’m still a fan. Last night I had the pleasure of watching the live streaming performance of Kevin Smith: Live From Behind.
At the top of the three hour event, Jason Mewes comes out to join Kevin Smith and they begin their podcast, Jay & Silent Bob Get Old. My cheeks hurt from laughing at the duo’s stories which typically revolved around feces, genitals and pet turtles having sex. Although Jason Mewes has been married now for six years, clean and sober for almost two years, and on the verge of buying his first home, he never fails to be his off-the-wall self. Some of the biggest laughs are watching Kevin’s reactions to what comes out of Jason’s mouth. In contrast, there are some touching moments where we get to see how proud Kevin is of Jay’s sobriety, as well as Jay growing up and fulfilling his dream of having a home and family. It’s obvious from watching the podcast that they are still the closest of friends and enjoy maturing together while still entertaining audiences.
The second half of the show was an interactive Q&A, alternating between questions from audience members and Twitter users. Always unique, sometimes strange, questions ranged from his upcoming project Hit Somebody, to whom or what he would like to see Batman fight. Personally, I howled at the idea of Batman fighting childhood obesity. Some fans wanted to give him gifts, while others just wanted to tell him how he had affected their lives. One of the most positive overtones of his show was about following dreams, and how once you reach them you can replace them with new ones to go after. Not a bad message from a Jersey boy who’s doing what he loves and invites everyone along to enjoy the ride.
