I have never seen a line-up this promising…ACEY SLADE, BLACK LIGHT BURNS and COMBICHRIST together at IRVING PLAZA in NEW YORK CITY. What a show and did I mention that I gave up the chance to photograph BARRY MANILOW to come here….yes, you read that right…I missed out on the MANILOW.
The night started out promising with the abs of steel, expectorate extraordinaire ACEY SLADE and his band of misfits consisting of the very talented CHRIS KLING(also in THEO & THE SKYSCRAPERS), ANDEE and PerC. ACEY SLADE bestowed his own very special brand of vampiric goth rock to the audience and they devoured it. This is a new project for ACEY and I am looking forward to watching it transcend to a deeper level.
I will admit that I have a sweet spot for the slip n’ slide ride that is, BLACK LIGHT BURNS. They are one of those bands that once you see them live you are hooked for life. WES BORLAND is just such a fabulous, train track villain mustache wearing front man. He covered and entire season of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE in one show by incorporating a twist, jive, contemporary and a dollop of disco into his performance. Keep in mind that he did this all while wearing tight pants and even he admitted that he almost turned his pants into shorts by doing too many splits. Take that PRINCE!!! I have not even gotten into the sensational band that WES shares the stage with, MARSHALL KILPATRIC, sickly talented drummer with the showmanship to match, NICK ANNIS, guitar magician with the best hair and JR, bass athlete. They played their biggest hits like LIE and MESOPOTAMIA off of CRUEL MELODY and some tunes off of COVER YOUR HEART. When the show was almost over WES offered up some advice to the audience, if they loved them they had one more song and if they wanted to see COMBICHRIST that they only had one more song. It is that kind of humor that makes BLACK LIGHT BURNS a rare treasure and why I adore them and I am telling you to see them live!
COMBICHRIST, consisting of the musical genius team of ANDY LaPLEGUA, JOEY LETZ, Z_MARR and TREVOR headlined IRVING PLAZA. The crowd craved it and they gave it. My hero, JOEY LETZ was on the drums and boy is that man captivating. You really have to witness how he executes his authority on the drums and crowd alike. No matter what band he plays in all eyes are always fixed on him and his arresting performance. ANDY knows how to command the audience with his growls and reckless abandonment. TREVOR is just consumed with talent and provided the essential go to grove of the night. Z_MARR is an ingenious synth master. The crowd went bonkers when they performed their hit, THIS SHIT WILL FCUK YOU UP. COMBICHRIST is electronic done right!
