STREET DRUM CORPS INTERVIEW JULY 2007

The talented Frank Zummo from STREET DRUM CORPS was sweet enough to do an interview with me.  The band consists of Frank Zummo, Bobby Alt, and Adam Alt.  Frank is from THE START, Bobby is from S.T.U.N. and FACULTY X and Adam is from CIRCUS MINOR.  STREET DRUM CORPS put on one hell of a live show and yes, it is certainly is chinchilla teddy bear humping sexy!  They have performed all over and with various major artists and members of bands such as 30 SECONDS TO MARS, THE USED, STOMP, NO DOUBT, BAD RELIGION, GOOD CHARLOTTE, STRUNG OUT, ALEXIS ON FIRE to name just a few.  They are a unique blend of multidimensional percussion, performance art, fashion and hotness.

LL:  I must commend you on all of the recycling you do.  I have heard trashy music before but I have never heard people play actual trash.  Do you find it difficult to look at anything and not want to bang on it to see how it sounds?

FZ:  Haha! We do bang on everything we see!

LL:  I absolutely love your fashion and make-up.  Where do you draw the most influence from?

FZ:  It’s kind of our own fashion that we experiment with. We make our own clothes and come up with our own makeup ideas.

LL:  I saw you on the $2 Bill Tour earlier this year and I thought you were sensational.  I admit that I was unfamiliar with you and thought that 30 Seconds to Mars had it in their rider to have some sexy sweepers with huge feet get the stage ready for them.  No one wants Jared to pull a hammy when he does the spins.   Seriously though, Frank, what size shoe do you wear?  I was in the balcony and all I could see was fluorescent green feet!

FZ:  Frank & Adam size 8.5 and Bobby 9.5. That was an amazing tour. We love 30STM, that’s our family! Jared & Shannon joined us a week ago on Warped.

LL:  When I saw you play it was incredible.  The energy was overwhelming.  How do you keep your energy up after so many shows?

FZ:  Two beers before a show! Haha! We are just naturally energetic people.

LL:  Your part at the beginning of 30 Seconds to Mars’ set was just beautiful.  You added so much and really established the mood of the evening.  How was it working with them?  I am a huge fan and they just seem like really wonderful people.

FZ:  It was amazing working with them! We all worked on that intro together.

LL:  You guys truly look like you are having the time of your lives on stage and I feel that is so important.  Do you have any pre-show rituals?

FZ:  Pre-show is an hour before. We stretch, put on makeup and stage clothes, warm up, run a routine, blast music and have a beer or two and smoke some weed.

LL:  Did you find drumming while growing up was the perfect creative outlet?  You can make a crap load of noise and people will tolerate it just because.

FZ:  We all started playing drums as kids.

LL:  I know that all of you are big animal fans so please keep me in mind if you ever start and animal band.  My little Anton Spider Chinchilla and Jared Leto Bunny are dying to go out on tour and make some noise.  Are you brave enough to work with them?

FZ:  We’re down!

LL:  In one word how would you describe your live show to people who have not seen it?

FZ:   Sexy!

STREET DRUM CORPS is currently on the WARPED TOUR so do yourself a favor and check them out!  They alone are worth the ticket price!  Don’t forget to pick up a cd and shirt while you are there.  They are wonderful guys and deserve and appreciate the support.  I am going to have to find a way to smuggle Anton Spider Chinchilla and Jared Leto Bunny into the show.  Did I mention that Jared Leto Bunny is a nipple biter so that is how good these guys are!  I am willing to risk it!
